George Bryan Family Lays Foundation For Mossy Oak Golf Club And Nature’s Golf In West Point, Mississippi
West Point, Mississippi, is becoming a more recognizable golf destination thanks to the vision and dedication of the region’s own George Bryan family. With roots in the food business, the family has been a major employer and civic leader within the region for decades. George continues this legacy with many contributions to civic development, Mississippi State University and the founding of two world-class golf courses: Mossy Oak Golf Club and Old Waverly Golf Club.
In the 1960s, George followed his father’s footsteps into the family meat business, Bryan Foods, and helped grow it into one of the largest companies in the South. Founded by John H. Bryan and W.B. Bryan, Bryan Foods combined livestock raising, slaughtering, processing and marketing into a regional powerhouse and grew into one of the largest employers in the state. The company negotiated a purchase by Consolidated Food Corporation of Chicago in 1968, which would later become known as Sara Lee Corporation.
Throughout his professional growth within the food industry, George maintained connections to home and a shared passion for the game of golf with his father. His business travels were often fortified by playing some of the world’s most legendary courses, with an attention to golf course design. George was intrigued with the thought of bringing a great course to Mississippi after watching his father build and operate a local nine-hole golf course in West Point. The experience of watching his father’s enthusiasm and passion for golf course management is what inspired George’s golf vision today, which has grown into the founding of Old Waverly Golf Club and Mossy Oak Golf Club.
In 1988, George and his wife Marcia opened Old Waverly Golf Club, now one of the premier golf courses in the Southeast and home to the 1999 Women’s U.S. Open and 2014 ISPS Handa Cup. The George Bryan family, along with a group of founding members, have owned and operated the private club since its creation, and the membership has reached beyond West Point to include business professionals, travelers and guests from across the South.
With Mossy Oak Golf Club, George, again, leads his family into an opportunity to create a premium golf destination in the heart of the Mississippi Black Prairie. Under George’s vision and leadership, Mossy Oak Golf Club will combine golf and nature to deliver an exceptional golf experience that will appeal to the outdoorsman in every golfer and the golfer in every outdoorsman. Combing renowned golf course architect, Gil Hanse, and outdoor lifestyle brand icon, Mossy Oak, is part of the magic that George, his family, and 76 founding members seek to create through a one-of-a-kind Nature’s Golf experience.
